Marmeletta and Mokas:Brunch at Latteria Studio
Sunday Brunch, reimagined.
As the soft, misty Roman morning lifted the city awake, I found myself making my way to Monteverde Nuovo, where the cosy Latteria Studio resides. Stepping into this haven, I was warmly welcomed by Alice, one of the studio’s passionate and friendly owners, whose enthusiasm instantly makes you feel like family. You’re guided inside this snug studio, where shelves brim with ceramics and cookbooks, whispering stories of culinary adventures.
Alice and her team bring to life the concept of ‘market-to-table’ cooking classes along with with seasonal lunches that transform fresh ingredients into delightful dishes you can savour, along with hosting brunches and utilising the studio for creative food photography.
This Sunday morning, I was in for an extraordinary experience—a brunch that was a celebration in itself. The intimate studio was alive with the lively chatter of friends new and old, and the irresistible scent of Azera milk bread freshly baked wafting through the air, lovingly slathered with homemade Scottish-style marmalade. Ah, marmalade—perhaps it’s the British in me, but few things are as delightful.
Yet, this homemade marmeletta is something special. With its sun-kissed orange hue, it was unlike anything I had tasted before, more than just a spread, it’s a story in a jar. Alice shared her stories with me of testing recipes and picking fruits on Rome’s streets.
What began as a passion project blossomed into a community project during the pandemic, offering young African women in Rome the chance to gain kitchen skills, earn independently, and learn Italian, fostering integration and community. You can read more on the project here and even get your own jar for less than 8 euros!
Enter the Cinnamon Buns
Within five minutes of stepping into Latteria Studio, I was cradling a freshly brewed moka in hand, surrounded by five new friends from across the globe, and greeted by the irresistible aroma of cinnamon buns. These treats, lovingly crafted by Fem, a talented Roman chef, were everything you dream of—warm bites of nostalgia twisted into the prettiest knots. Their reputation speaks for itself, as guests couldn’t resist buying bags to take home along with pots of marmalade to boot.
The highlight of this brunch was a memorable culinary first: Khachapuri, expertly crafted by Dilruba, a talented cook from Azerbaijan who works alongside Alice in the studio. This traditional Georgian dish, a boat-shaped bread filled with oozy cheese and crowned with a perfectly cooked egg, was pure magic. The first bite was an explosion of rich, gooey delight that tempted me to indulge in seconds—and nearly thirds!
Latteria Studio isn’t just a place for food; it’s a haven of warmth and connection. Every visit invites you to savor more than a meal—it’s a celebration of community, diversity, and the love of sharing food.
